Hi there again. Its been a while again since I had something to tell you, but, HEY!, things change sometimes. The last few days were very busy and I got some things done, I wanted to do for some days.
The first thing is (who guessed right?!) in a technological manner. I finally have telephone (nice and easy Up0/E for the courious) and Ethernet (juppie… no more lazy W-LAN bridges that won’t even work if you need them the most) in my “Studio”-Gardenshack-Something. The benchmarks told me of about 98.3MBit/s for the ethernet cable (100m) and the telephone is working great also (well… its digital, so its working or its not :P). This was my first attempt to patch a cable to a wallmount Cat5 plug and I know now, that I don’t have to fear them anymore. Its was very easy even without a patch tool.
After I realized, that there are two wires left unused in the cable (8wire - 4wire for ethernet and 2wire for Up0/E) I thought about what to do with those. I remembered me, sitting in the Gardenhouse with the LAW (Linux Audio Workstation) on and with the fileserver in my room (2 floors above me and a long way through the garden) off… because of that, without music… Since my fileserver doesn’t support Wake on LAN, there is no cheap way for switching it on by remote (since yesterday there wasn’t but there now is :)). I remembered the POWERON switch of ATX compatible mainboards as a two wire low voltage switch, so I got the strange idea of enlarging the cable to 120m over the two free wires, so that I would be able to switch my fileserver on by remote. It was some soldering work and now, apart from the normal power on switch, my fileserver has a nice RJ45-Plug that, if you shorten contact 4 and 5, switches on the fileserver. The work left was some patching and soldering again, to mount a small switch in the gardenhouse for power on. You might not believe it, but it worked. Result: Even if the power on switch cable of you mainboard is commonly only about 1m long (0,5 to and from the switch) you might enlarge it to 120m with some mainboards ;).
Yesterday, I got my new sopranino alto recorder also. I ordered it in a local music store and they finally got it :). Its a YRN-302B II plastic recorder, F-Tuned, baroque system and not very expensive. Mine was about 14 euro… you might get it for abou 12 online. After playing the first few tones, I realized, that it has a dissonant subtune, recognizable above the c, but there in the whole tone range. I was a bit disappointed, but I work on improving it.
Tomorrow is my first day in the university. This week, there is a Firstie (for the germans: “Ersti - Erstsemester”) week, to introduce all us newcomers to university life. I am a bit afraid of that, because I don’t know, what might come but I like to think about all the nice and kind people I might meet. I will keep you up to date the next week about one new part in my life. University Life! For those who don’t already know, here are my 2 courses: Informatics and social science with the aim of getting a teacher.
Thats it for now. Have a nice day you all and a nice week, too.
